ABOUT US

Get To Know Evangel

WHAT MAKES US PUSH FORWARD

It is no secret that we are about making people into passionate followers of Jesus. From God’s Word it’s clear that this is the mission of the church…to make disciples. More important than mere numbers—that is, the quantity of disciples—we’re interested in the quality of discipleship—teaching people how to follow Jesus Christ. For many who find themselves at Evangel, there is the realization that there has been a brokenness to how they have been living life, and it has been here that they have found the healing Grace of our Lord Jesus.

So our emphasis in every part of our ministry is getting every believer to the place where they Worship Christ, Walk with Christ and Work for Christ. Breaking that down a bit, it simply means that at Evangel each follower of Jesus should be part of one of our two Sunday worship times, join a small group, find a place to serve, and actively share their faith with others.

Now maybe you just stopped by to look around the website; we’re glad you did! But maybe you’re checking us out today because you’re looking to join with a community of Jesus followers who are passionate about the same things you are…the things we have mentioned right here. It may just be that God has brought us together and that you are the answer to our sincere prayers for him to build his church. Either way, we hope Evangel will be a blessing to you.

OUR LEADERSHIP TEAM

WE ARE EMPOWERED BY PASSION

  • Steve Wiseman
    Steve Wiseman ELDER

The Lord Jesus Christ opened Steve’s eyes in his mid-high school days. An old friend had his life changed around by God, and being curious, he wanted the same. Shortly after his walk with Christ began, he realized that the Bible is actually is God`s Word to us. He became drawn to those parts of His Word which seemed ridiculed most (particularly the “beginning” and the “end”) – holding them in honour – and found them to be completely trustworthy and “ahead of their time”. His time at Evangel has provided opportunity to serve alongside some great men and women of God.

Prayer, teaching (particularly on the “beginning” and the “end”), helping to oversee Biblical doctrine, ‘watching from the wall’, and other practical ways of serving also provide opportunity to see Jesus lifted up. Steve and his wife Rachel, along with their family (Naomi, Sarah, & John Heo – Ben & Jesse came later) tried to move as close as they could to Evangel because they saw in her truth and love. Steve’s love for the Lord is the catalyst that fuels the passion for teaching others about God’s Word, he does this through his leadership in small groups at Evangel and through the Landmark BibleSchool that he sits as President on the board of directors. He also teaches pottery, stained glass and other hands-on skills in a school for special needs children. Other Interests include geology, gardening, and floor hockey.

  • Stan Starkey
    Stan Starkey ELDER

Stan has been the lead Elder at Evangel for almost ten years, having moved to Kitchener from the London area. Stan is the husband of one wife (Lori), the father of four adult children, and the grandfather of six amazing grandchildren.

Stan grew up in rural Southern Ontario and met Lori in grade ten. They married soon after high school and began their family while pursuing his degree at London Baptist Bible College. For the next eighteen years Stan and Lori served God and raised their family at Faith Baptist Church in St. Thomas Ontario while operating a small business and raising their family.

God finally opened the door to full time ministry in 1998 and began to prepare them for their arrival at Evangel. It has been an amazing journey together as God has been growing both Stan and Lori, and the Church. It is Stan and Lori’s prayer that God would allow them to spend a significant amount of their remaining years doing life with this body of believers.

  • Clare Fuller
    Clare Fuller ELDER

Clare Fuller learned that God called people to confess their sins and come to him to have their sins forgiven during the summer of 1965. By the end of the summer he knew that this was what the Bible said, that it was true and that he had to respond. This happened in the EMCC church in North Bay through the preaching of the pastor and visiting evangelists. He was baptized shortly after and joined the church in December that year. Within a couple of years Clare understood that he needed daily dependence on God to see sin overcome in his life. He has never regretted following Christ Jesus, or using his mind, body or heart to serve God. Clare joined Evangel for the first time about 1978, when a student at Emmanuel Bible College.

He rejoined in 1988 just before going to Nigeria as a theological college teacher. Retiring from teaching in 2010, he returned to Canada with his family and a year later was called to be an elder in Evangel. Along with his wife Halima, he volunteers in various ways to encourage Evangel and other churches to increase our welcome to new Canadians into our churches. He has also been an usher and a greeter. Clare enjoys learning about every kind of science, Nigeria, classical music, Bruce Cockburn, archaeology and church history, especially Canadian and EMCC history. He likes to find God’s hand in everything.

  • Ivan Preston
    Ivan Preston ELDER

Ivan was born into a Christian home in Markham, Ontario. At the age of 10 he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal saviour. After some time working for his father, he decided he’d like to study God’s Word at Emmanuel Bible College. During that time he met his wife Donna and had 3 children. In 1994 they served as full time missionaries in Mexico where they planted 5 churches.

Ivan’s role at evangel is basically to help in any way he can. His hearts desire is to see folk come to know Jesus as Lord and Saviour and become part of the body at Evangel. Ivan prays daily for the pastor and the people of Evangel.

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel. It is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: for Jew first, and then Greek. For in it is revealed the righteousness of God from faith to faith;as it is written, “The one who is righteous by faith will live.”

THE APOSTLE PAUL – ROMANS 1:16-17

STATEMENT OF FAITH

THESE ARE THE ESSENTIALS WE BELIEVE

The Bible

We believe the Bible to be the complete word of God, that the sixty-six books, as originally written, comprising the Old and New Testaments were verbally inspired by the Spirit of God and were entirely free from error.
(II Timothy 3:16; II Peter 1:20-21; II Timothy 1:13; Psalm 119:105; 160; Proverbs 30:5)

God

We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect in all His attributes and eternally existing in three equal persons, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
(Gen. 1:1, 26-27; 3:22; Psalm 90:2; Matt. 28:19; I Peter 1:2; II Corinthians 13:14)

Jesus Christ

We believe in the absolute and essential deity of Jesus Christ; in becoming man He did not cease to be God. He eternally existed with the Father and agreed to become a man, die on the cross, and rise bodily from the grave to satisfy the righteous demands of His Holy Father.
(Matt 1:22-23; Isaiah 9:6; John 1:1-5, 14:10-30; Hebrew 4:14-15; I Corinthians 15:3-4; Romans 1:3-4; Acts 1:9-11; Titus 2:13; I Timothy 6:14-15)

Holy Spirit

We believe in the absolute deity of the Holy Spirit. The ministry of the Holy Spirit is to exalt the Lord Jesus Christ in the world.
(II Cor. 3:17; John 14:16-17, 16:7-13; Acts 1:8; I Corinthians 2:12, 3:16; Gal. 5:25; Eph. 1:13; Eph. 5:18)

Satan

We believe in the existence of Satan as the originator of sin and the arch-enemy of God. As a spirit being he leads his demonic forces in the continual attack upon the people and purposes of God.
(Isaiah 14:12-15; I Peter 5:8; II Corinthians 11:3)

Salvation

We believe that salvation takes place when the sovereign election of God and the obedient response of man come together. The Holy Spirit opens the heart of an individual with the Word of God. They see their total helplessness before God apart from the work of Christ and turn to God in repentance and faith.
(Romans 6:23; Eph 2:8-9; John 14:6, 1:12; Titus 3:5; Galatians 3:26; Romans 5:1)

The Church

The true church is composed of all who through faith in Christ have become children of God. The true church is manifested in specific locations called local churches. The local church exists for the purpose of glorifying God through the fulfillment of the Great Commission.
(Eph. 5:23; Romans 12:1; Acts 2:42-46; I Cor. 14:26; Matt. 28:18-20)

GOD’S FAITHFULNESS

OUR HISTORY

Evangel began as a church plant by Bethany Missionary Church, in a new neighbourhood in Kitchener, Ontario. Ground was broken in 1949 and 15 months later, on September 24th 1950, the church was dedicated and began its ministry to the community. In 1955 there were still no pews, only chairs, yet people came to worship in God’s house and celebrate joyous events including a wedding in August of that same year.

“For I know the plans I have for you, ‘declares the Lord,’ plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:1

With Pastors to teach the Word of God, Worship Teams to lead in praise and adoration, and Sunday School teachers to teach our young children about God and His love for them, Evangel has reached out to the community over the years through Summer Vacation Bible School, and children’s programs during the school year. Many Christian missionaries and leaders have developed their gifts through serving at Evangel, and then gone out into the world to spread the gospel in other contexts and cultures. Prayer has been our stronghold as God has lead us through many avenues of life at Evangel. Evangel is a church with open arms to those who enter its doors.
